a brand born out of discovery

THE CONCEPT

What does it take to build a product, from idea all the way to market? We set out to do it ourselves, in order to gain a better understanding of the manifold processes that our clients work through every day.

THE SUBJECT

Now the question was, what to make? Something simple to start with, but not overdone. Something we could improve upon with a fresh design. The humble combination square seemed a perfect candidate.

SKETCHING

It isn't enough to just give an old product a face-lift. True innovation is more than aesthetic, and essential functionality must be preserved. We explored every option imaginable for locking mechanisms to find the best solution for usability, manufacturing, then visual appeal.

PROTOTYPING

Part of designing a product is taking it off the page and refining it by hand. Laser cutting provided an easy way to quickly iterate our designs hands-on.

THE NUTS & BOLTS

Once we arrived at a beautifully working design, it was time to determine how it would be made. Materials and hardware were sourced. Some changes had to be made as well, which so often happens when designs meet the real world.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

With all the options for production on the table, we considered finishing options, color and styling to complement the essence of the structural design.

THE BRAND

The form of the product then extended to define a visual identity for the Anvil brand.

THE FINAL PRODUCT

Now we had much more than an idea. We had a product ready to be manufactured. We had a brand that could inform things like packaging and marketing, and had room for future products. Next we set our sights on actually bringing it to market.

THE PACKAGING

We designed the Anvil packaging to the highest standards of protection, efficiency, sustainability, and experience for the e-commerce environment.
